When Tracy McGrady signed with the San Antonio Spurs, it was a huge surprise.
After averaging 25ppg with Qingdao in the Chinese Basketball Association, it wasn't a huge surprise for his former employer that he got another chance in the NBA.
It's not just another chance either. McGrady not only advanced to the second round, but he's also contending for an NBA championship with a legitimate contender.
Quingado GM Shun Tin commented on McGrady returning to the NBA this season.
We hope T-Mac is playing well elsewhere and can get a championship. It's is a very good thing, and we would like to see it. (hupu.com)
He also mentioned that T-Mac and the organization have created a close relationship and Tin wasn't shy about the possibility of his team wanting McGrady to return if there's no suitors for him in the NBA.
If T-Mac can't find a suitable contract next season in the NBA, I think he will be back to CBA. He will still be our first choice, we are confident that we can get him to sign back.
McGrady will have a lot to prove for his next NBA contract, but right now he's chasing the title he's been longing for his whole career.
No one knows exactly how the playoffs will end or how much McGrady will contribute, but his next contract will certainly be on what he can show with the Spurs this postseason.
T-Mac just got garbage time in Game 4 of the first round and didn't show anything with two months off. He'll be expected to contribute something in the later rounds, especially if the Spurs get in offensive droughts like they're known to.
Whether he plays to his full potential or a shell of his former self, it seems McGrady will still have a strong following in China after this season.
