Lakers’ woes get bigger

The Los Angeles Lakers have been struggling this season, even when they're at full strength. They couldn't seem to have chemistry on both ends of the floor and close out games during crunch time when it matters. Now it seems that the situation can really get worse for Laker fans. Their two starting big men are out indefinitely:

Howard, who originally injured his right shoulder Friday night against the Clippers and re-aggravated his shoulder last night, was examined today by team doctor Steve Lombardo. An MRI exam revealed that he has a torn labrum and will be out indefinitely; he will travel with the team this week to Houston and San Antonio and will receive treatment from the team’s training staff. He will be re-examined in a week. (Lakers.com)

This is a huge blow to an already struggling team. While Gasol's injury is huge, it'll be Dwight Howard that will be missed most of all.

His rebounding will be sorely missed. If you need evidence of how dominant he can be on the boards, he grabbed 26 rebounds in the game he got injured against the Denver Nuggets. He's the team's best defensive big men on an offensive oriented team.

Gasol has struggled with the team and has been a non-factor in some games. Even though he's the most verastile big the Lakers have, he doesn't bring near the production on both ends of the court that Howard does.

With the team being a disappointing 15-18 this year so far, these injuries could push them completely out of the playoff picture. If things play out horribly for the team, it may persuade Dwight Howard to leave the team this offseason via free agency.

The Lakers will have to make a lot of tough decisions with this team if it keeps underperforming this year. RIght now they're at $100 million in salaries and will be over the luxury tax with Howard's absence. For Laker fans, this "dream team" may have turned into a nightmare.
