The comeback by the San Antonio Spurs last night was one of the greatest team performances I’ve ever seen. The game will go down as one of the best of all time… and it was only Game 1 in this best of seven series.
To watch a lead slip away like that has to be extremely demoralizing for the Golden State Warriors. It was more than just an opportunity to steal a game on the road, the win was practically giftwrapped for them, and they let it slip away.
If you’re the Warriors, you try to take something positive away from the loss, like the fact that you managed to get a big lead on the road against a team that’s supposed to beat you. Warriors guard Klay Thompson is already looking forward to Game 2.
"The beautiful thing about this is redemption,” Thompson said. “We did have an 18-point lead. We need to take care of the ball and get stops. We can redeem ourselves on Wednesday. I think we are as good if not better than this team. We can get out and run. We just need to do that to them in Wednesday."
I remember writing a post about a year ago about Thompson saying he could be “just as good, if not better, than Manu Ginobili,” right after the Spurs had spanked the Warriors by 21 points. We know Thompson is not short on confidence, and yes he did a solid job at defending Tony Parker in last night's game before fouling out but there’s a fine line between being confident and being stupid that he seems to like to flirt with a lot.
I do agree that the Warriors can find a lot of good things to build on in the fact that they controlled most of the game, but to just flat out say you’re better than a team after they pulled off one of the greatest comebacks of all time seems a little silly.
