Jim Boylen: Coach Pop’s new top man

With the departures of longtime assistants, Brett Brown to head the wayward ship of the Philadelphia 76ers and Coach Mike “Bud” Budenolzer on his way to join Danny Ferry with the Atlanta Hawks, the question turns to who will be sitting next to Coach Greg Popovich next season as his top assistant.

According to Indiana Pacer’s beat writer Scott Agnes Jim Boylen is to be the top assistant next to Coach Popovich.

Boylen is a NBA and College basketball coaching veteran who has learned from some of the best coaches in basketball.

He began his coaching career under the tutelage of Jud Heathcote at the Michigan State campus in East Lansing.

Boylen left Lansing and went on to join the staff of Rudy Tomjanovich in Houston where he was part of the coaching staff that won back to back titles with Hakeem Olajuwan and Clyde Drexler.  He has experience in working with great passing big men like Olajuwan and Yao Ming, which will make his transition to the Spurs offense a little bit easier.

After Houston he spent some time back in East Lansing on Tom Izzo’s staff.  The Spurs would benefit from taking note from the hard nose defense that was played down on the low block by the Spartans.

The addition of Boylen will also help assistant coach Ime Udoka as well.  It will give him another source to learn from.

So Spurs’ fans, does having an experience man like Boylen make you feel more at ease with the departure of Coach Bud and coach Brown? What about other coaches in the league that San Antonio should consider to replace Brown and Budenholzer?
