Western Michigan is chasing the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship final, and hopefully a title as well. Minnesota hasn’t made the final game since 2014, winning their most recent title 11 years prior in 2003. The Golden Gophers have won five national titles in their history.
2022 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championships – Western Michigan vs Minnesota
Both Minnesota and Western Michigan played in overtime contests in the first round to reach the quarterfinal, which could run long again. The two teams haven’t played yet this season, but only need to look in the mirror to prepare for this one as they are so similar. Western Michigan may have the higher seed, but even down to their per-game scoring, they are only one 100th better, though top-five in the nation nonetheless.
The Broncos are led on the offensive end by senior Ethen Frank, the nation’s top scorer per game, nearly averaging a goal per contest. He was held without a goal in the first round against Northeastern but still made an impact. His seven shots kept the defense true on him, and he was able to pick up an assist on the game’s first goal, a key one that helped them hold on to win.
On the other side of the ice, Big Ten Player of the Year Ben Meyers and Minnesota had a big first round. They scored four goals and needed all of them to defeat Massachusetts 4-3 in overtime. Trailing 2-0 in the first period, Meyers assisted on the Golden Gophers’ first goal to Ryan Johnson. He was then the hero in overtime when he found the net for his only goal of the night but adding to his fantastic performance.
Whichever team comes out on top, it will be a tough test in the Frozen Four next weekend as the winner advances to play the nation’s best team, Minnesota State. The Mavericks have had to battle through the first two rounds, but are chasing history as they pursue their first finals appearance.
