The No. 5 Baylor Bears open their season hosting Mississippi Valley State and coincidentally open the entire college basketball season. The Bears will have a few new faces in the lineup, but will still be one of the older teams in the Big 12. They have some main roster pieces coming back in LJ Cryer, Adam Flagler, Flo Thamba, and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua. They were able to land BYU transfer guard Caleb Lohner as well as Jalen Bridges from Big 12 rival West Virginia.

What Baylor fans are undoubtedly most excited about is the commitment of five-star guard Keyonte George to the program. He is a likely top-10 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and should be a huge reason why the Bears potentially win the Big 12 and advance in March.

  • When: Monday, November 7, 2022
  • Start Time: 12 PM ET
  • Location: Ferrell Center – Waco, Texas
  • How to watch: Big 12 Network/ESPN+

This is purely a warmup game for the Bears before they get into the meat of their schedule. They won’t be looking ahead to those games yet, but they have the likes of Gonzaga, Washington State, Virginia, and Marquette on the schedule before they begin conference play. This should be a blowout and hopefully a sign of how well the Bears can play despite some new players joining their older stalwarts.

Baylor vs MVSU Preview

Mississippi Valley State is a nice cupcake left out at a picnic in the park that the Bears are going to devour. There’s honey in there and they can smell it. This is going to be the first time we see Keyonte George play on a Division-I stage. Most people are hoping to see his smooth shooting and playmaking on display in this one and it should give him a nice confidence boost to start the season.

This will be a chance to see how Baylor’s new-look lineup responds to pressure and a live setting, even if it is likely not an electric one. A midday game and the first one of the season brings its own challenges so Baylor will have to make sure it comes out with the right energy and doesn’t try to sleepwalk its way to a victory.
