In today’s world, there’s no shortage of mixed martial arts leagues. There are, however, fewer options for women than men to launch their careers, and for both sexes, early compensation isn’t great. That’s where the Pallas Athena Women’s Fighting Championship aims to be different. On Saturday, January 15, 2022, the PAWFC will hold its premier event with more than seven fights taking place inside the Palladium. It all goes down at the Grey Eagle Events Center on the land of the Tsuut’ina Nation in Calgary, Canada.

PAWFC 1 women’s MMA Preview and Lineup
Watch history be made on Saturday night in Calgary, Canada when the PAWFC takes to the Palladium for the first time. In the early hours of Saturday morning, it was announced that the main event of Sarah Kaufman (22-5-0) vs Claudia Leite (7-2-0) in a bantamweight title match had to be withdrawn. Two fighters at different points in their career, Kaufman, 36, from British Columbia will take on an opponent 11 years her junior. The 5’5” Kaufman will have a one-inch height advantage, but give up that inch in the reach to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist, Leite.
As evidenced in her record, Kaufman isn’t new to MMA. She’s taken fights where she can get them from Invicta, Strikeforce, and the UFC in her 16-year career. Leite is still fighting, literally, for her breakthrough in the world of MMA. She is ranked 18th pound-for-pound among Brazil women according to her Tapology profile. With the withdrawal, Kaufman is the first PAWFC title-holder per the PAWFC on Instagram.
Now serving as the main event is a battle at strawweight between Laura Fontoura (6-0-0) and Andy “The CrAsian” Nguyen (6-9-0). Looking for any opportunity to fight, Nguyen has appeared in a number of fighting leagues over her 12-year career but has yet to breakthrough. At 39 years old, she’ll take her first shot at a title in the strawweight division of the PAWFC against Fontoura. Fontoura made her professional debut in 2018 at Samurai Fight 1 and has yet to lose. Of her six fights, she’s finished three of them in the first round, all by armbar.
