Hanga taking a part of Spurs back with him to Hungary

San Antonio Spurs draftee Adam Hanga recently spent the better part of two weeks in the Alamo City working out with Spurs coaches along with fellow draftee Davis Bertans and several other players.

The Spurs must’ve seen something they liked in their time with the Hungarian prospect, because they will be sending former Spurs intern and current Austin Toros assistant Alex Lloyd to Hungary for four weeks to continue to work with Hanga and the Hungarian National Team in preparation for the European Championship Qualifiers.

Lloyd, who has worked under both Quin Snyder and Brad Jones for the Toros, is a smart choice for the Spurs. Part of his job with the Toros is player development and you will often see him out on the floor working with players, like he did with Hanga.

The Spurs choosing to invest so much in a player, when they haven’t done so for others including Bertans or Nando De Colo, could speak to Hanga’s transition to the NBA coming sooner rather than later. It’s unlikely that Hanga would come stateside for next season, but next summer may be the perfect time to bring him in with an aging Manu Ginobili being a year older.

Hanga, at this point in his career, seems very similar to Ginobili after he was drafted. Hanga is still for the most part an unknown guard/forward with impressive athleticism that has the speed and skills to become an above-average defender in the league.
