George Karl hopes Popovich coaches Team USA

Gregg Popovich has been talked about as the favorite to land the Team USA head coaching job this season. Doc Rivers has also been named alongside Pop, but the general consensus is that the San Antonio Spurs head coach is the most qualified and worthy of the position.

You can add Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl to that mix of people who think Popovich (who served as an assistant to Karl on the 2002 FIBA World Championship team) should be named head coach.

"I hope he gets the USA job," Karl said. "I think he wants it. He's a military guy who, I think, brings a dignity to representing the United States, and he's also earned the respect of the basketball world."

Karl is one of the most respected coaches in the NBA and his backing for Popovich should go a long way with those who are in charge of naming the head coaching position. Pop's success has come with one lone franchise, the San Antonio Spurs, and they have been the franchise's most successful years in their history with championships. Popovich's backing from multiple coaches, even from Rivers himself.

If he doesn't get the job, it'll be a disappointment for a man who's got the backing of the majority of his peers and an accomplishment his fan base feels he's more than deserving on getting.

We'll find out soon who's given the job, but it's hard to argue against Popovich if more respectable coaches come out and support him getting the nod for Team USA head coach.
