Gay to make Preseason Debut Friday vs Kings

Thursday, San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich told the media forward Rudy Gay will be making his preseason debut Friday against his former team, the Sacramento Kings.

When asked about how he feels to get back on the court and play against an opposing team, Gay said, “I’m excited just to put the jersey on and go out there and compete.”

“It’ll be fun,” Gay continued. “It’s kind of bitter sweet that I get to play against Sacramento.”

After rupturing his left Achilles tendon in mid-January and then recovering from surgery since then, Gay has been cleared to resume all basketball actives. He’s already been participating at practice in the Spurs’ training camp and he even played in last Saturday’s open scrimmage. However, Popovich has already said the team won’t rush Gay back and they’ll ease him into the season. Gay didn’t play in Monday’s 106-100 loss at Sacramento.

It’ll be interesting to see if Gay starts at the 3 with Kawhi Leonard out for the preseason or if he comes off the bench behind Kyle Anderson, who has been starting in place of Leonard. Friday’s game tips off at the AT&T Center at 7:30 PM CST.
