Gasol leads Spurs to rout of Grizzlies: Three Standout Players

0

The San Antonio Spurs had eight players in double figures as they earned a 108-85 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies (17-30) at the FedEx Forum on Wednesday night.

The victory was the second straight for San Antonio, who put together back-to-back wins for the first time since December 26 and December 28. Coach Pop elected to rest LaMarcus Aldridge after he put up a 30 point effort as Manu Ginobili, Rudy Gay, and Kawhi Leonard all remained out.

Here is what went good and bad for the Spurs, as well as three standout players: Pau Gasol, Patty Mills, and Danny Green.

The Good:

  • The Spurs put up back to back wins for the first time in nearly a month. Despite both wins coming against teams dealing with internal issues and injuries, let’s hope this is a positive turnaround for the silver and black.
  • LaMarcus Aldridge got a well deserved night off.
  • Danny Green and Patty Mills found their shot.

The Bad:

  • Pau Gasol did not get his triple-double.

Three Standout Players:

Pau Gasol: With LaMarcus Aldridge having the night off, veteran center Pau Gasol took over the scoring role and used his long experience to lift the Spurs to the win.

Gasol finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists on the night, but fell one assist shy of a triple-double. Pau out dueled his brother Marc and scored easily as Memphis was missing Jamychal Green. The fact the Spurs have such a veteran presence like Pau on the team proves just how important he still is to teams at 37 years of age.

Patty Mills: The fan favorite guard continued his hot shooting month of January on Wednesday night in Memphis, helping out Gasol in the scoring column.

Mills finished with 15 points off the bench on 50 percent shooting (5-of-10) and went 3-of-7 from three point range. After having a rough start to the 2017-18 season, Mills had seen a rise in his game to begin the new year. Let’s hope this is a sign of good things to come from Mills as the postseason approaches in the next few months.

Danny Green: The Spurs guard rebounded from a poor 1-of-7 shooting night on Tuesday and put together a solid night’s work just 24 hours later.

Green scored 14 points and was 2-for-4 from three point range. Green has gotten some fans in an uproar over his inconsistent play, but we all know his defense is what really makes him dangerous. For example, Tuesday showed despite a poor shooting night, he can still make a big shot when the Spurs need it the most.

Up next:

The Spurs are now 32-18 on the season and will return to the court on Friday when they open a five game home-stand when the Philadelphia 76ers (23-21) pay a visit to the AT&T Center at 7:30 p.m.
