The San Antonio Spurs are undefeated in the 2012 NBA playoffs, are riding a 19-game winning streak 
and look poised to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals.
Last night, the Spurs rallied to beat the Thunder (101-98) in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals with some clutch baskets made by Gary Neal. Neal posted 12 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, and shot 56% in Game 1 which helped the Spurs not only the win but secure their 19th win in a row.
However, Neal doesn’t think much of that impressive win streak, and feels it means nothing at all when he was recently asked about the historic stretch of wins.
No, not really, because if it doesn’t turn out the way we want it to turn out, with us winning the championship, nobody’s going to talk about the streak or care about the streak. It kind of goes hand in hand. If we continue to win and continue to put ourselves in position to win a championship, then maybe after we complete our goals, people will talk about the streak.
This sentiment exactly sums up what the Spurs are about this playoff run. It’s quite clear San Antonio is gunning for title number five. With mid-season acquisitions of Boris Diaw, and Stephen Jackson, it was clear then, the Spurs were going to go all out for another title.
The Spurs can rattle off 12 wins in a row en route to the NBA Finals but what does it matter if at the end of the day, they are not celebrating another championship down the Riverwalk in San Antonio.
Sure, a 19-game winning streak is great for fans to talk about, and media to dissect but for Neal and the rest of the Spurs, it means nothing.
And it is this type of mentality that makes up championship teams. Something the Spurs are well aware of when it produced a title in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
