Forbes drops 36 points as Spurs throttle Skyforce

AUSTIN – After starting the game with an 11-2 run, fueled by San Antonio Spurs assignee Bryn Forbes, it didn’t take long to realize Thursday night would be special.

The rookie out of Michigan State finished with 36 points as the D-League Spurs defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce, 122-105.

Forbes shot a blistering 13-for-17 from the field to lead the silver and black, while also tallying eight rebounds and three assists. Cory Jefferson tallied a double-double to add to Austin’s assault, as he finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Patricio Garino had 18 points in 31 minutes. Charles Garcia and Jeff Ledbetter had 15 and 13 points, respectively.

As for Sioux Falls, Patrick Miller put up 22 points, two rebounds and three assists for the Miami Heat affiliate. His backcourt partner, Bubu Palo, had 18 points, three rebounds and four assists. And Marcus Posley chipped in 13 points off the bench.

Once the Skyforce made a couple baskets to end Austin’s 11-2 run, the Spurs used another swift 11-0 run to push their lead out to 22-6 midway through the first quarter. In dominating fashion, the Spurs led by as much as 19 points before finishing the quarter up 37-26.

That lead would soon be cut down to eight points, after the Skyforce used an 8-0 run to close out the first half and put some fear into the Austin faithful. Luckily a Ledbetter 3-pointer and a pair of possessions by Bryn Forbes gave the Spurs a 65-50 lead at halftime.

The second half would be just as dominant for Austin.

In the second half, the Spurs would mount their lead to as large as 25 points, as the frontcourt duo of Livio Jean-Charles and Cory Jefferson shouldered the load offensively for the silver and black.

Austin finished the game shooting just 36 percent, but the damage was already done en route to a 17 point victory.

Coming up for the Austin Spurs (16-19) will be a Friday night tilt against the Northern Arizona Suns (17-17). Tipoff is tonight at 7:30 p.m. from the HEB Center at Cedar Park.
