There may be a taker after all for the San Antonio Spurs' power forward DeJuan Blair, who's seen most of this year at the end of the bench for the team.
After the acquisition of Boris Diaw last season, Blair has been at the end of the bench with the Spurs' depth in the frontcourt and an arriving Aron Baynes did not help Blair's cause either.
It's been heavily rumored that the Spurs have been wanting to move Blair for a while and this year they may find a taker for him. The Golden State Warriors are welcoming Andrew Bogut back to the lineup after an injury, but they still want frontcourt help, and may be targeting Blair according to MercuryNews.com.
The Warriors would love to get their hands on Denver's Timofey Mosgov, or even San Antonio's DeJuan Blair. But acquiring worthy help would require the Warriors to part with someone they like.
While the report is interesting, the latter part may not be true.
The Spurs have a ridiculous amount of depth in just about every spot, which includes players being versatile enough to play multiple positions on the court. San Antonio may not be asking much in return for Blair, maybe some cash or a second round pick because his low salary wouldn't bring much back anyway unless the Spurs were doing a package with Blair.
One of the problems in trading Blair is that the Spurs don't want to let him go as a free agent for nothing but also don't want to help another contender along the way. Contenders will have low picks unless they were aquired from another team and bad teams will have good picks but no need for Blair's low expiring deal.
The Warriors may be the exception for the Spurs though. Golden State is looking to contend for a title right now and they're playing at a high level, but they don't seem to have the size for the playoffs against an Oklahoma City Thunder team or San Antonio Spurs team. Blair wouldn't help fill in any of the holes they have but he would surely contribute in how Golden State tends to want to play in a fast paced game. Although it's just a report, don't be surprised if the Spurs part with Blair if the Warriors are really interested.
San Antonio may get a pick to stash away overseas which has been successful for them and getting something for Blair in return while not putting a contender over the top or making them better than them in the process.
