Doc endorses Pop for next Team U.S.A. coach

Team U.S.A. is cruising in these 2012 Olympic Games and are currently 3-0 after completely devastating Nigeria. And should the U.S. march towards yet another gold medal, it will certainly be the last time head coach Mike Krzyzewski will be leading the team. This begs the question — who will be the next head coach for the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics?

Right now, many feel it could be a two-man race between Celtics’ Doc Rivers and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. And if it does come down to these two great coaches, Rivers recently made a classy move by giving his endorsement for Pop. Basically, Doc says he would consider the job but only if Pop passes on the job.

Pop is a no-brainer pick for the job. He and his staff excel at finding foreign talent and Pop is respected among NBA players. However, there’s that little issue between he and Jerry Colangelo that needs to be fixed first. In essence, years ago Pop wanted the job but Colangelo gave the gig to Coach K.

Kudos to Doc for recognizing the best in the business should be at the helm of Team U.S.A. But should Pop decline, I can’t think of a better coach than Doc to lead the charge in 2016.
