Diaw: Loss to Grizzlies still on Spurs’ mind, wants to remain a Spur

Tonight the San Antonio Spurs will look to go up 2-0 in their first-round series against the Utah Jazz but it is last year’s first-round loss to the Memphis Grizzlies that is still weighing on the team’s mind according to Boris Diaw.

Diaw spoke to French site L’Equipe.fr about the Spurs and the playoffs and mentioned last season’s loss to Memphis still haunts the team.

It is true that here, everyone is still thinking about the (playoff) elimination of last year. So we approach the first round with the utmost seriousness. This is not because we are the first-seed and approach the round like it will be easy. The experience of last year is still very present at this level. And I also feel some anger toward Memphis who defeated the Spurs. The team remembers that series and would love to play Memphis to avenge the loss.

Indeed the first-round loss to the Grizzlies should hang over the Spurs like a dark cloud. That Spurs team was the first-seed in the West last season, played extremely well in the regular season and were entering the playoffs with high expectations. Unfortunately, injuries caught up to the Spurs and Memphis was playing at a high-level. Had the Spurs been healthy, it might have been a different story.

As for Diaw’s future with the Spurs (he is to become a free agent after this season), he wants to remain in San Antonio but says nothing has been done to make that happen yet.

For now, nothing has been decided. We’ll see if I’m in the plans of the front office. I would like to stay because everything is fine here. But for now, we have to focus on the playoffs. The discussions have not yet started, we’ll wait until the playoffs end.

What do you have to say Spurs fans? Would you like to see Diaw back next season?
