Despite preferences, odds are Leonard won’t land in Los Angeles

  1. The Kawhi Leonard saga continues in San Antonio, with news last week that Leonard wants out of San Antonio after a season in which he played nine games and spent time in New York rehabbing from his quadriceps tendinopathy injury.

Leonard, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and a Finals MVP, was thought on by many as the face of the franchise after Tim Duncan retired, but if reports are true, Leonard may not be in San Antonio for long.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Leonard has not communicated wishes to be traded directly to the Spurs, and the Spurs could also choose to have Leonard play out his current contract next month in lieu of trading him, if the situation can’t be remedied.

Original reports by Yahoo’s Shams Charania listed the Los Angeles Lakers as Leonard’s primary destination. However, the Lakers would need to package a convincing set of assets in a trade to entice Spurs’ front office to let him go to a conference rival. Leonard becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, where it may be more likely for him to leave the team. Bettors will want to keep an eye on the situation, with reputable Betting sites offering the latest opportunities to follow the market.

It would be unlikely for the Spurs to trade him to a Western Conference team, unless what they got back in return greatly outweighed any other offers, but the pieces teams like the Lakers and Clippers can offer don’t seem to be as enticing as those from several Eastern Conference teams.

Many expect the Boston Celtics to be frontrunners to land the services of the all-star forward if he is indeed traded. The opportunity to land a player like either Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown along with some draft picks could be promising as the Spurs would have future high draft picks and a player to start at small forward in place of Leonard right away.

The story of Leonard’s time with San Antonio isn’t quite fully written yet, though, and his future in the Alamo City seems uncertain at best.
