San Antonio Spurs guard Cory Joseph will soon begin his fourth stint with the Austin Toros, The team announced today that the 6-3 sophomore guard has been assigned to the Spurs' D-League affiliate.
As I wrote recently, it would likely be between Joseph or Nando De Colo on who the Spurs would send to Austin, especially with five players capable of playing point guard on the roster.
Joseph has only played one game for the Spurs this season. Last season Joseph led the Toros to the D-League Finals before he was called back to help the Spurs in the playoffs. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists with the Toros last season.
While Spurs fans won't see Joseph on the bench for Spurs games, this is a good move for both Joseph and the Spurs. There's no doubting Joseph has improved since last season, likely due to his time with the Toros and leading the summer league squad. This way, Joseph gets on the floor more and gets more time and experience learning all the nuances of the Spurs system. For a young, developing guard, the time he gets now to learn "on the job" can be crucial to his success in the coming years.
Joseph will be yet another former Longhorn with the Toros as former Rick Barnes assistant Ken McDonald was recently hired as an assistant coach for Taylor Jenkins' staff.
Joseph's first game with the Toros will likely be tomorrow in their final preseason game against the RGV Vipers.
