Corey Brewer was close to signing with San Antonio

Corey Brewer was a free agent a few years ago and had a couple of suitors for his services. The San Antonio Spurs were one of those teams and needed a small forward badly at that time. Those were the days when Richard Jefferson was starting in the silver and black and underperforming with the expectations he had since being traded to the team. The Spurs could score, but they needed help on the defensive end.

It makes sense as to why the Spurs were interested in Brewer. He's a young, long defender who doesn't mind guarding the other team's best player on a consistent basis.

Brewer went on to sign with the Dallas Mavericks and won a ring that season, but him playing in San Antonio is closer than you think.

"It came down to San Antonio, Dallas or Boston — those were my three choices. I almost came (to San Antonio), I'm not going to lie," he said. "One more day and I would have come here. Dallas gave me a three-year deal." (

Spurs fans aren't complaining since they now have Kawhi Leonard starting in the small forward position and got rid of Richard Jefferson in exchange for Stephen Jackson. The Spurs are a far better one-on-one defensive team, especially in the perimeter. It would've been interesting to see Brewer in a Spurs uniform as he's a player who would do well in the system, but you can't really blame the team for not offering a third year. San Antonio has been taking it easy on the salary cap since having to since the Jefferson fiasco where he was clearly underperforming his contract.

The Spurs now have more contract flexibility because of shorter and lower contracts, which is opening up the window that was closing for Tim Duncan to win his fifth championship. Maybe Brewer will reconsider this upcoming summer when he's a free agent again?

What do you think Spurs fans? Would Corey Brewer be a good addition to the Spurs next season?
