Tomorrow night, the San Antonio Spurs will face the Cleveland Cavaliers and could face a Cavs team without star rookie Kyrie Irving. Irving did not take part in any contact drills in a Cavs’ practice recently, due to a sprained shoulder.
Irving wore an elastic brace Monday on his right shoulder, which he injured in Friday’s loss to Milwaukee. The NBA’s presumptive rookie of the year sat out Saturday’s game in New York, and coach Byron Scott does not yet know if the 20-year-old will play Tuesday against San Antonio. Scott said the decision will be up to him and he will be extra cautious with Irving.
Irving, who was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month today, is averaging 18.9 points, 5.7 assists and four rebounds per game for the Cavs.
If Irving does not play, that would leave the Cavs without their top scorer, which means Cleveland’s skid and San Antonio’s winning streak could both grow to eight games tomorrow.
• Dentmon back to Toros
Justin Dentmon, who was called up from the Austin Toros on a 10-day contract, was released yesterday after he appeared in just two games. With Tony Parker fully recovered from his hamstring injury, and with Gary Neal and Patty Mills both spending time at point guard, Dentmon became expendable and should rejoin the Toros soon.
