Can Spurs recent success get season going in the right direction?

The San Antonio Spurs have gone through several ups and downs to start the 2019-20 season. They started the season off on fire, winning their first three games before losing a large percentage of their remaining games.

The Spurs are currently 12th in the Western Conference with an 8-14 record, and their chances to reach the NBA Finals on most online sportsbooks are slim to none, and in fact, their positioning now would have them out of playoff contention at all.

However, the Spurs have had two big wins lately in the last week that could start to signal winds of change in San Antonio.

The Spurs were on a two-game skid last week before taking on one of the league’s best on Friday. They took on the Clippers with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and dominated defensively, playing one of their best games of the season in a 107-97 win.

They followed it with a terrible performance a few nights later, but on Tuesday night in San Antonio, with all-star forward LaMarcus Aldridge sitting out the game, the Spurs pulled off a come-from-behind win over the Houston Rockets in a game that went to double overtime before the Spurs secured the 134-133 win.

Against the Pistons and Rockets, Lonnie Walker IV, who has played limited minutes all season, started seeing more playing time and he made an impact. The sophomore swingman fueled the comeback for the Spurs against the Rockets and finished the game with 28 points and four rebounds, and he played very well against James Harden.

Jakob Poeltl also played a big role and constantly turned James Harden away at the rim, finishing with 15 rebounds, five assists, and five blocked shots.

Aldridge will likely return to the lineup on Friday night, and Walker may have earned some extra minutes. If this is the rotation that finally works for San Antonio, they could finally find their footing and start collecting some wins as their upcoming schedule looks a bit easier than the last few games, however, the Rockets will have an opportunity to avenge the loss on December 16, which should also be a big game.

It’ll be interesting to see where the Spurs go from here. Do they start moving up the Western Conference standings and earn another consecutive playoff berth yet again or is this the year the success under head coach Gregg Popovich comes to a halt?

There are 60 more games left to answer all of those questions.
