Before Tip-Off: Spurs and Grizzlies both awaiting start of season

AT&T CENTER – The San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies last met a few months ago back in May during the Western Conference Finals. Then, the Spurs swept Memphis in four games as the Grizzlies offense could not keep pace with the Spurs’ run-and-gun style of play.

The Spurs, like last season, will start with the same lineup that finished the end of last season: Tony Parker, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Tim Duncan, and Tiago Splitter according to head coach Gregg Popovich in his pregame press conference.

Also of note, last week the Spurs’ new military-inspired uniforms gained a lot of attention. However, for the opening tip, the team will wear the alternate silver jerseys that were used from last season.

The Grizzlies, who are under new head coach David Joerger, intend to keep up their physical style of play that they have established in the past according to Joerger. Meanwhile, they’ll also look to highlight point guard Mike Conley in the offense while inserting former Miami Heat forward Mike Miller into the rotation.

Asked pregame if he saw anything during the preseason on the current state of his team, Popovich responded, “We’ve got a lot of games to go,” as game number 1-of-82 begins, “I won’t assess much now.”
