The San Antonio Spurs are in Dallas to face the Mavericks tonight which could also mark the NBA debut for the team's newest addition – Aussie center Aron Baynes. Baynes was officially signed by the Spurs this past week and many Spurs fans are excited to see what he will bring to the team hopefully tonight.
But it is not just the Spurs fans who are excited, so is Baynes.
In an interview with Australian radio Morning Glory of Sen SportsSENtral, Baynes not only admits he is excited to be a part of the Spurs but opened up on what he can bring to the team, playing with fellow Australian Patty Mills, how this all happened and more.
Baynes on how it all happened for him to become a member of the Spurs:
"After playing in the Olympics, I got on a bit of a roll there. Then I went on to the Euroleague and played the first round really well. I was one of the best rebounders in the Euroleague for the first round and so there was a bit of interest and my agent managed to find me a good spot for me with San Antonio. San Antonio is one of the premier organizations in the NBA and they have a real strong international influence and they've worked well with a lot of international players in the past. When they came to the table with an offer, it was a pretty easy decision for me to make."
Baynes on playing with fellow Australian Mills and former national team coach Brett Brown:
"Brett Brown being the national coach for the last four years and he's been here (San Antonio) for 12 years now. Patty Mills being the starting point guard for the Australian team. There's definitely an Australian influence here. It's a bit of a comfort zone for me to come in to. I know a lot of players are not lucky enough to come into a team with a coach and a player they played with a long time before let alone international players coming over. I am pretty lucky for that."
Baynes on what he can bring to the Spurs:
"I want to bring toughness and energy. They're a great team and they've shown that with how they been playing this season and for the last decade. I just want to be able to come in and compliment the team. I think to do that I have to bring some toughness and some energy. That's my main focus."
Baynes on playing for the Spurs:
"Not only have they developed great international players but they also have some of the best players to ever play the game on the team currently. It's definitely a good learning opportunity for me and also not only from the players but from the coaches as well. (Gregg) Popovich is one of, if not the most successful coaches currently in the NBA. It's a great environment for me to learn from and I just want to soak up as much as I can from it."
Baynes will get a chance to show what he can give San Antonio tonight versus the Mavs.
