Austin Spurs vs Capital City go go

After failing to win their third straight game against the Stockton Kings on New Year’s Day, the Austin Spurs will now look to get back in the win column in a two-game set against Capital City. The Washington Wizards affiliate won their New Year’s Eve bout with the Greensboro Swarm and will look to continue their winning ways in a rare two-game series with Austin. The Spurs have really lacked consistency this season and will hope to find it during this early stretch of January, where they will play three games in five days. It will be a tough stretch for the Spurs, but if they can get some wins, this stretch of games could turn the season around

Austin Spurs Preview

The Spurs were looking to make it three straight wins in their last matchup vs. the Stockton Kings. Unfortunately, it ended in a 108-94 loss for the San Antonio Spurs affiliate. As expected, Alize Johnson has been the star man since returning from the NBA ballclub, totaling 23 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Charles Bassey also had 14 points and nine rebounds and rookie Blake Wesley also rounded up 14 points on the night. The progression of Wesley is becoming more apparent as his minutes in the G-League are increasing. Players like Wesley and Johnson are really showing their talent and what they can offer to the table, and that is why it is important that they continue to get quality minutes down in the G-League.

Austin will still need to look to shape up the defensive output. This has been a consistent issue so far this season, and while the Spurs are putting up a decent amount of points most nights, it’s the defense that is hurting them, especially in transition. Improving this is so key to winning ball games, and if they can work on the fine-tuning of it all, they can turn a lot of those close losses into major wins.

Capital City Go-Go Preview

The Go-Go ended the previous year strong with a 131-124 win over the Greensboro Swarm. There were some big performances on the night, including center Vernon Carney Jr. with an impressive 35 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Carney Jr. is a dominant big man who also can hurt you from three-point range. A familiar name to NBA fans is Kris Dunn is also on the roster, and he is performing well with a recent 24-point performance. The former fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft brings veteran leadership to the Go-Go, last playing in the NBA in 2022 with Portland. This Go-Go squad is one of the more talented sides in the G-League, especially in a loaded Eastern Conference. This will not be an easy test for Austin as they are hoping to jump right back into the win column despite facing a tough two-game road test.
