Austin Spurs announce local tryouts

The Austin Spurs announced today that they will hold open tryouts for local basketball players in September.

With the rebranding and expansion of the G-League as it strives to become a true minor league system of the National Basketball Association, tryouts have come under a bit of scrutiny lately.

G-League rosters are capped at 12 players with only 10 placed on the active roster. Even with 26 teams, the argument is that local player tryouts water down the league’s product.

Last season the Greensboro Swarm, which is affiliated with the Charlotte Hornets, recorded 170 registered participants, each paying anywhere from $100 to $200 for a chance to crack the G-League roster. Though tryouts are unfairly labeled as hope trafficking, they create a necessary revenue stream and a sense of community to the organization.

Despite the criticism, success stories with local tryouts continue to happen. Most notably is Jonathon Simmons, who parlayed his $150 registration fee with the Austin Spurs a few years ago into a 3-year contract, reportedly worth $20 million, with the Orlando Magic this offseason.

More recently, the Austin Spurs signed guard Jeff Ledbetter from last season’s open tryout. Ledbetter, who had been playing basketball overseas since 2011 managed to turn his tryout into an invitation to play for the San Antonio Spurs summer league squad just last month.
