Austin Spurs Acquire Mouhamed Saer Sene

Last week the Austin Spurs announced the acquisition of the 7-foot sensation out of Senegal, Mouhamed Saer Sene.

Sene has played overseas since 2009, most recently with the Sharks Antibes of France (2013) where he averaged 8.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in three games, and other teams including the Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada (12-13), Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (11-12), BCM Gravlines Dunkerque (10-11) and Hyeres-Toulon Var Basket (09-10).

He appeared in 52 NBA D-League games with the Idaho Stampede and Albuquerque Thunderbirds averaging 11.2 points and 8.8 rebounds in 26.7 minutes. Sene was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2006 NBA Draft. He appeared in 47 total NBA games with the SuperSonics/Thunder and Knicks averaging 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game.

Mouhamed Sene was the 10th overall pick in the notoriously weak 2006 NBA Draft that featured the likes of Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. As a rookie, Sene would be the Seattle Supersonics starting center under head coach Bob Hill, but quickly fell out of rotation and would find himself traveling back and forth from Seattle to the D-League’s Idaho Stampede.

The following season, Sene did a lot of the same, only seeing time in Seattle thanks to a laundry list of injuries to the Sonics roster. He would play 13 games for head coach P.J. Carlesimo before being sent down to Idaho, where he would tear his lateral meniscus, forcing him to have microfracture surgery on his right knee.

Sene, now wearing number 32 with the Austin Spurs, appeared briefly in both games this weekend. In his combined 14 minutes of action, Mo Sene tallied five points, five rebounds and three blocked shots over the two games.

Still only 28 years old, the 7-foot Sene should be a serviceable reserve for the Spurs if he can use his 7 foot-8 1/2 inch wingspan to his advantage, especially on defense.
