Austin Spurs acquire guard Kendal Yancy to fill out roster

CEDAR PARK – The Austin Spurs announced on Friday afternoon that they have acquired guard Kendal Yancy.

Signing Yancy is the corresponding roster move to replace Livio Jean-Charles who departed for Spain earlier this week.

The name should be relatively familiar to fans of the G League squad and fans of Texas basketball.

Yancy played four years at the University of Texas under former head coach Rick Barnes and current head coach Shaka Smart, where he averaged 4.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.

Most recently Yancy played with two G League clubs this year – the Austin Spurs and the Iowa Wolves.

His stint in Austin occurred back in November after he was signed to replace Olivier Hanlan, who left to represent the Canadian national team during the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying games.

After being released, Yancy signed with the Wolves back in February. He appeared in only one game, ironically against the Austin Spurs, before being released again.

With Yancy playing four years in the Spurs’ backyard, it was easy for head coach Blake Ahearn to reach out to Texas and get some thoughts on the former Longhorn.

Some of our assistants talked with the Texas guys and had good things to say about him,” Coach Ahearn told Spurs on Sixth in November. “It’s a great opportunity for him to be a part of it and we’re happy to have him.”

Yancy will be available tomorrow night as the Austin Spurs take on the South Bay Lakers in the final game of the regular season.

He will wear #35 and will be a member of Austin’s playoff roster.
