Anderson hoping to be back with the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have been quiet on the free agent market this offseason. It’s clear they’re happy with what they already have and they’ve been working to re-sign their key pieces. One guy waiting and wanting to be one of those pieces is James Anderson.

Anderson still wants to be in San Antonio but the Spurs haven’t made an offer yet. He is free to sign with any team and his agent is reportedly getting some offers, but it looks like he’s holding out to see what kind of contract he can get with the Spurs.

While Anderson has suffered through some injuries in his career and hasn’t gotten enough real minutes on one of the deepest rosters in the NBA to prove himself, he thinks he can make a contribution to this team in the future. He says his play at this year’s summer league in Las Vegas is good enough to warrant a spot on the team.

“I was solid,” Anderson said. “I think I did well on both ends of the floor. I think I can score the ball a lot better but this is what we’re here for. To get better and to improve and work on our game.”

Unfortunately for Anderson, he’s a guard on a team that’s stacked at that position. I don’t doubt his talent or his determination but if he stays in San Antonio he’ll probably get lost in the mix for at least a few more years. The Spurs have already committed to sticking with Danny Green, and obviously ManuGinobili is not going anywhere. They finally got to sign Nando De Colo, who will probably play some shooting guard and I’m sure the Spurs want to see what he can do. It’s not the right move for Anderson to stay, but if he wants to take less money and be one of the last guys on the bench rather than play for more and get more playing time on a lesser team, then that’s his business. He just has to decide what his top priority is.
