When the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, 89-74 on Sunday afternoon, there was something oddly familiar about the team that was displaying their dominance on the floor.
Kyle Anderson’s 22 points led all scores for the Spurs, who only had three players in double figures. Anderson also added in five rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes of action. The other two players in double figures? Anderson’s former Austin teammates.
After coming off an impressive Utah summer league performance with the Pacers, Jarell Eddie scored 15 points, all on three pointers, and added in two rebounds in 23 minutes. Meanwhile, San Antonio’s newest Spur, Jonathon Simmons, filled every last bit of the stat sheet with 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals.
It was a nice night for the three former Austin Spurs, who led the team to a 32-18 record last season, and made it all the way to the NBA Developmental League’s Western Conference Finals.
But none of these guys have more to prove right now than Simmons. The soon to be 26-year-old wing has yet to even have a cup of coffee at the NBA level, spending the last two years in Austin before signing his two-year deal with San Antonio. And as he drove down the lane to punish the rim for a second night in a row (video below), it’s obvious that San Antonio may have found another summer league gem, who was just hiding about 100 miles north of the AT&T Center.
