Alumnus Watch: Simmons named MVP of 2015 Summer League Championship Game

For the second day in a row a former Austin Spurs forward won MVP honors during Summer League.

After a nail-biting 93-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night, Jonathon Simmons would be named MVP of the 2015 Summer League Championship Game just one day after Kyle Anderson won MVP honors for the tournament.

Simmons would surpass his averages over the last two weeks of 16 points, 4.2 rebounds and three assists per game with a final performance of 23 points off the bench to go along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

In just a matter of weeks, the University of Houston product parlayed his strong performances for the Brooklyn Nets summer league team into a two-year contract, first year fully guaranteed, with the San Antonio Spurs. And now the soon to be 26-year-old Simmons has managed to pull himself from relative obscurity, toiling away in Austin for the last two seasons, into a household name, at least among Spurs fans and basketball fans alike.

Head on over to our sister site, Project Spurs, for a full recap of the Spurs defeating the Suns. In the meantime, watch Simmons talk about working with Becky Hammon as a head coach below.
