3 Toros In D-League’s Prospect Watch

Justin DentmonThe reigning D-League champion Austin Toros are in great position to defend their title as training camps open this month.  That also means members of the Toros' roster are in good position to help the Spurs should an injury occur mid-season.

According to NBA.com, three Toros players, including last year's MVP Justin Dentmon, are rated in the D-League's top 30 prospect watch.

  • Dentmon comes in a 11th on the list.  Dentmon spent Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks before returning to Austin.  He's a dynamic scorer who's a little undersized, but could easily provide a scoring spark of the bench for the Spurs if called upon.
  • Wesley Witherspoon comes at 18.  You'll remember Witherspoon from this preseason, where he gradually improved all areas of the game.  Witherspoon can guard 3's and 4's, block shots and I would imagine he's going to be working on that corner 3-point shot a lot.  Not sure we'll see 'Spoon this season, he seems to be in San Antonio's long term plans for now.
  • JaMychal Green just made the cut at 27.  Green was a very late addition to Spurs training camp, seemingly solely to make sure Green was in Austin this year.  Think of Green as a DeJuan Blair type player, but a little more athletic and not as polished offensively (Blair's offense is fine outside the lack of a jumper).

One last note from the Propect list.  James Anderson is listed as the number five prospect as a member of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.  He's also listed as an affiliate player which means the Houston Rockets have his rights.  According to the Vipers' website, Anderson was traded from the Bakersfield Jam to the Vipers in exchange for Jerel McNeal.

The Rockets only have James Harden and Daequan Cook listed at shooting guard.  Anderson could very easily get called up if an injury happens or even if the Rockets just feel they need more depth at the wing.  For now, Anderson gets to be one of, if not the best member of a team which will hopefully help him find confidence in his shot and the rest of his game.
