Week 2 of the AMA Supercross season revs up on Saturday, January 15, 2022, in Oakland, California inside RingCentral Coliseum. The schedule opened up last weekend in Anaheim where it was a battle of champions for the top spot and the first win of the season. Round 2 AMA Supercross in Oakland Race Preview
In the 250s last weekend in Anaheim, Colt Nichols’ first season ended before it really got started. The 2021 250 East champion, he was leading his heat race before sustaining major injuries, breaking both of his arms on the “whoops” portion of the course. That opened the door for Craig to take the evening in the division and open the season with a win for the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing team. Craig will look to repeat his success in Oakland on Saturday.
For the 450s, all racers made it out of Anaheim without ending up on the injury report. Not everyone will be in action, however, as Justin Brayton announced on Friday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the race. Brayton is a two-time Australian Super Cross SX1 champion. He finished 13th in Anaheim.
From the spectator’s perspective, one of the highlight features of the course is the jump – a spectacle in Supercross. The launch takes the riders over the full width of the starting line, going into the last third of the lap. With a series number of hairpin turns and “whoops”, it is truly exciting. Where the race will be won and lost, as RacerXOnline.com puts it, will be the rhythm sections that are the “meat and potatoes” of this course.
