2022 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Preview
For casual fans of rugby 7s, if the 2021 season flew under your radar, it wouldn’t be surprising. As international sports continue to return, the 2021 Sevens Series was just two tournaments in Canada in September, held in Edmonton and Vancouver. South Africa won both events, capturing the 2021 title.
Notably missing from the 2021 and the 2022 Sevens series are the 13-time winners – the All Blacks. They announced in September that the COVID-19 is the factor that will keep them out in 2021 and in 2022. Winners of the tournament 13 times, this certainly opens the door for other nations to have a better shot… kind of. With a number of nations out, Canada and the United States improved their place in the standings, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Great Britain and Kenya were both able to make strong use of the situation as well, earning a pair of top-three finishes on their way to silver and bronze medals. As the competition level is once again raised with the participation of nations from the Pacific, the western nations will look to use their momentum to solidify their position as contenders. Aside from New Zealand, only South Africa and Fiji have ever won the event, while Samoa won it in 2009-2010. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was the last global event for Rugby 7s to feature all nations, which saw Fiji defeat New Zealand in the gold medal game, while Argentina took the bronze over Great Britain.
