When and where are this year’s Oscars?

The 94th Academy Awards make their triumphant return to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles this Sunday, March 27. The ceremony is set to begin at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET and will be hosted by a trio Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer.

Who is hosting the Oscars?

Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes will be teaming up, the first time the ceremony will have a host since 2018.

How is the competition shaping up?

In what is widely seen as an attempt to increase rating awards for the following categories will be cut from the live broadcast: documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound. These awards will still be presented at the Dolby Theater just before the broadcast begins.

Oscar history has already been made this year before the ceremony even begins with the nomination of “CODA” star Troy Kotsur for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as the first Deaf man to ever be nominated for an Oscar. Steven Spielberg has secured a nomination for Best Director for “West Side Story” making him the only Director to receive Best Director nominations in six consecutive decades. This is the first time couples have been nominated in all four acting categories. Penélope Cruz is up for Best Actress in “Madres Paraleas” her husband Javier Bardem Is Nominated for Best Actor in “Being the Ricardos.” Kirstin Dunst is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in “The Power of the Dog” she is engaged to Jesse Plemons who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in “The Power of the Dog.”

Potential Oscar history also hangs in the balance. If Kristen Stewart wins the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in “Spencer” she will be the first Actress to with the award without being nominated for a SAG or BAFA award in the same category. If Ariana DeBose wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role “Anita” in “West Side Story” she will be the first woman to win an Oscar for the same role that was previously played by someone who won an Oscar for the same role. Rita Moreno won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of “Anita” in the original 1961 “West Side Story.” Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog” directed by Jane Campion is nominated for Best Picture and if it wins the Oscar it will be the first film made by a streaming service to win the award.
