What is the Mr. Olympia Competition

The practice of bodybuilding goes back to the Ancient Greeks, but, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, really took off in the early-mid 20th century. In the 1950s and 60s, the Mr. Universe competition was the most prestigious title in the art of establishing pronounced muscle mass. From the early days, the athletes of bodybuilding now have different divisions, which carry different objectives and standards.

How is the Mr. Olympia Competition Scored

In the Mr. Olympia competition, the qualified individuals compete in pred-judging by individually performing eight mandatory flexed poses, in order, within a timeframe of 60 seconds. Per the International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness (IFBB), the order of the poses in the qualifying round are front double biceps, front lat spread, side chest, back double biceps, back lat spread, side triceps, abdominals and thighs, and finally their most muscular pose. The athletes may be brought back out in selected groups if the judges need to see one or more of them side by side to make their determinations.

For the athletes that advance to the final round, each bodybuilder performs a sequence of poses of their own design to the music of their choice in a performance that lasts no longer than three minutes. Once all of the finalists have finished their performance, they all take the stage again, where they take required poses in a stage called “the callouts”. In the callouts, the athletes do the poses next to another athlete for judging comparison. The last portion of the finals is a 60-second posing session to music that is selected by the event’s promoter.

To determine a winner, the qualifying score for each athlete in the finals is factored into their score obtained in the finals. The athlete with the lowest score wins.

Mr. Olympia Purse

The purse amount for the Mr. Olympia Weekend has grown throughout time. With an original prize that today would be worth just over $7,000 for the winner, the festival now carries a new prize amount this year of nearly $1.6 million, which will be spread across the weekend’s 11 divisions. A large portion of which goes to the winner of the Mr. Olympia competition.

This year’s total purse is $200,000 heavier than last year, where the winner, Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay won $400,000 as Mr. Olympia 2020. Elssbiay edged out two previous Mr. Olympia’s to earn the title.

Was Arnold Schwarzenegger Mr. Olympia?

From 1970 – 1975, Arnold Schwarzenegger was dubbed Mr. Olympia six consecutive times, winning a seventh title in 1980. While his title amount has been surpassed a number of times, the movie star and former politician is undoubtedly the most famous bodybuilder and is credited for the mainstream awareness of the practice.
