Sacred Heart vs Holy Cross 2021 FCS Playoff Preview

Kicking off the 2021 NCAA FCS Football Playoffs are the Sacred Heart Pioneers (8-3) against the Holy Cross Crusaders (9-2). Leading the way for the visiting Pioneers is junior running back Malik Grant, who is a Walter Payton Award finalist, the FCS’ equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the best player in the division.

After a slow start to the season, Grant quickly found his footing in October as he strung together four consecutive games of more than 100 rushing yards. Against Merrimack on October 9th, Grant rushed 28 times for 228 yards but surprisingly didn’t find the endzone. The following week against Central Connecticut State, he made up for not scoring the previous week, running for three touchdowns and another 183 yards. He looks to help Sacred Heart compete for a championship in their fourth playoff appearance.

Standing in the way of Sacred Heart are the Crusaders, who surprisingly suffered their only two losses of the season at home where they are 3-2. In Holy Cross’ first home playoff game since 1983, they’ll rely on their FCS fifth-ranked rush defense to stop Grant. Making their third consecutive playoff appearance, the Crusaders have yet to advance past the first round. Last year’s condensed spring season saw Holy Cross qualify after posting a 3-1 record in the regular season. They ultimately fell to South Dakota State 31-3.
