2017 Spurs Eurobasket Guide

The 2017 FIBA Eurobasket tournament will kick off Thursday, August 31. For the San Antonio Spurs, three of their current players will be participating in the event with their home countries, while one of their potential draft prospects will also be playing in the tournament.

Spurs center Pau Gasol will be representing Spain, Spurs forward Davis Bertans will be playing for Lativa, Spurs new center Joffrey Lauvergne will be playing for France, and lastly, Adam Hanga, whom the Spurs hold his NBA draft rights, will be playing for Hungary.

Each country will be placed into one of four groups with six teams in each group. France (Lauvergne) will be in Group A, Spain (Gasol) and Hungary (Hanga) will be in Group C, and Latvia (Bertans) will be in Group D.

Each team will play five games in the group phase of the tournament which takes place from August 31 through September 8. If a team finishes with the Group phase in positions 1-4 of their group, then they’ll advance to the Final phase which will take place from September 9 through September 17.

The Spurs’ specific players and Hanga’s schedule have been provided through the first eight days of the tournament below. All times are listed as CST.

While watching the Spurs’ participants in Eurobasket through the group phase, you may see some familiar faces that were once on San Antonio’s roster and some other notable NBA players.

France – Former Spurs Boris Diaw and Nando De Colo.

Spain – Utah’s Ricky Rubio, Memphis’ Marc Gasol, the Knicks’ Willy Hernangomez, Denver’s Juancho Hernangomez and Oklahoma City’s Alex Abrines.

Latvia – New York Knicks’ Kristaps Porzingis.

Serbia – Former Spur Boban Marjanovic and Sacramento’s Bogdan Bogdanovic.

Croatia – Philadelphia’s Dario Saric, Phoenix’s Dragan Bender, and Indiana’s Bojan Bogdanovic.

Greece – Spurs draftee Georgios Printezis and Sacramento’s Georgios Papagiannis.

Turkey – Cleveland’s Cedi Osman and Philadelphia’s Furkan Korkmaz.

Slovenia – Miami’s Goran Dragic and future NBA draftee Luka Doncic.
