Curtis Jerrells: A diamond in the rough?

1

With the San Antonio Spurs working out guard after guard this off-season, it seems the team is still looking for some insurance at the position. Well perhaps they need look no further than the Austin Toros’ Curtis Jerrells who is  currently on the training camp roster and suited up for the Spurs last season.

Jerrells has proven to be a solid starting guard in the D-League in just the one year he has spent with the Toros. In 50 games for the Toros this past season, Jerrells averaged 20.7 points, 5.7 assist, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals a game.

He also shot about 38% from behind the three-point line and 47% overall from the court. Not to mention Jerrells also made it to the D-League all-star game by being voted in by other coaches around the league. That in itself speaks volumes, especially for a player who joined the team after the season started.

During the Toros playoff run last season, Jerrells stats improved in points, assists, steals, field goal and free throw percentage. This is a testament that when the spot light and pressure is on, he performs and shines with the rest of the stars. He has shown he is not afraid to shoot the ball, which is the type of guard the Spurs seem to be looking for. So it would make sense for them to take a deeper look at Jerrells.

This summer at the 2010 NBA Summer League Project Spurs’ co-founder Jeff Garcia spoke with Jerrells in an one-on-one interview and there is no doubt he is ready and willing to learn at the next level:

One of the biggest things for me is I am a good scorer and a good passer but I still got to know at what times of the game I should score and what times of the game I should pass and find other guys. That’s been one of my biggest steps for me this season.

As a point guard you are leading the team and we win as a team. As a point guard a lot falls on my shoulders.

Although it would be tough for the Toros to have a successful season after losing player after player, it would be nice to see Jerrells get a shot at the NBA, which he rightfully deserves.

  1. Curtis Jerrells is a ball hog. I watched him in high school, college and w/ the Toros.. He is a “ME-1st” type of player, which is the worst kind and he makes horrible clutch decisions.. His game would excel tremendously if he would not watch his stat line throughout the game.
