On a short, but information-packed special episode of The Spurscast. Michael and Jeff talk to MVN’s resident draft expert Sam Panayotovich about addressing Spurs team needs in the draft and profiling some of the players who might be around for the spurs taking.

Sam has the Spurs taking Kansas guard Mario Chalmers with the 26th pick Thursday night in his mock draft over at Southside Perspective.

A few of the other players discussed are Nicolas Batum, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Courtney Lee, Serge Ibaka, George Hibbert, Ryan Anderson, Richard Hendrix, DeAndre Jordan, Marrese Speights. Sam names Joey Dorsey and Chris Lofton as potential second round steals for the Spurs.

Why would the Spurs spend a first round draft pick on a back-up point guard when we need to get younger at the 2/3 position? The Spurs could also use some front court help. Mario Chalmers makes no sense to me for the Spurs first round pick.

Trey, thanks for commenting. Chalmers was just one of the players we talked about that could fill a need for the Spurs. Although I think a 2-3 or big might be better, the Spurs could certainly start looking for a long-term backup point guard, and Chalmers defense and shooting intrigues me. His draft profile will be up here later today.

I don’t really see a need to get a PG… Parker will be getting the bulk of the minutes for the foreseeable future so it would only be as a backup… I think the Spurs will get by with veteran back up help. The big needs are at the 2/3 and inside agreesive rebounding. I commented on the Rush and Batum profiles with my thoughts. I do look forward to hearing this podcast as the insight and comments offered are always good.
