Oberto opts out

ObertoIt looks like Fabricio Oberto has opted out of the final year of his contract to become a restricted free agent. His agent, Herb Rudoy, says Oberto wants to stay in San Antonio.

It’s not too much of a surprise, especially after his playoff performance. Oberto, who made $2.5 million a year last season, started over Francisco Elson during the Western Conference Finals averaging 10.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

In comparison, Elson makes $3 milllion a year, Melvin Ely made $3.3 million and Jackie Butler, one of the Spurs biggest disappointments, made slightly less than Oberto.

I’m sure Oberto will get some interest from a few NBA teams, but unless a team signs to him to a ridiculous offer sheet like Jared Jeffries got last year, the Spurs will likely match.

In the case he does leave, we’ll make sure to send our Oberto Facts to a blogger from that team.

Fabio is crazy. A player like him is lucky to be getting 2.5m. Unless he’s opting out to take LESS money and remain with SA. The fact that bigger scrubs are overpaid doesn’t mean he’s gonna get overpaid - especially not by The Spurs, where a corpse could play along side Duncan and look amazing.

Lucky to get 2.5m? Come on now, he definitely stepped up during the playoffs and played very consistently. He complimented Duncan well and cleaned up after him. which isn’t always easy to find in a big. I’m not saying he deserves much more but atleast as much as Elson isn’t a stretch.

    it’s not a matter of how much he’s “worth”…
it’s a matter of how much someone is willing to pay him. What everyone else in the league makes is, in the end, immaterial.

I agree. Oberto riding coattails of Duncan and comp. He will be a fool to leave or to get all money-hungry. I always said the Spurs need to get better at Center spot. Elson and Oberto do not cut it at all.

Ah give me BS jeff. Oberto will stay and he was very good in the playoffs. He led us in some stretches and put the daggers on some teams. Just when they were making a comeback Oberto would come up and make an easy basket. He is invaluable for the Spurs and the Spurs have to match whatever he wants.

Want BS? Here it is, Chris actually believed his pathetic, gay ass fantasty team would beat mine and in the end, I schooled him and destroyed his lame fantasy team. Who was the champion? Not weak ass Chris. He was a pathetic 4th place finisher. Give it up Chris.

As for Oberto, he is not invaluable. I’d rather have Pachulia at center for the Spurs rather than lame ass Oberto. He sucks major dick and if he wants to leave, then good riddance. He get easy baskets bc he is riding Duncan’s coattalils. No Duncan, Oberto is more of a scrub then he already is.

he wants his piece of the cake…I wouldn’t say he’s invaluable, but he’s a good fit in a machine that works perfectly. he’ll have his money. that is a champ move!congrats fabio

I would welcome his return for say $3-$4 million at the most. He needs to show that he’s consistent before he gets cash around the midlevel exception.
