As Project Spurs reported, San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker is now the owner of French club ASVEL after he purchased a majority control of the team. It will be his first foray into a different aspect of professional basketball after he served as Vice President of ASVEL for quite some time.
However, TP has a great example on how to run a team considering he plays for the Spurs – a team any NBA teams try to emulate and consider the gold standard.
And it is this experience he will be taking with him when it comes to managing ASVEL with some good advice from head coach Gregg Popovich.
During Parker’s French radio show, he stated Pop is already handing him advice on running a franchise along with taking what he has learned from the team’s front office.
“I play with the Spurs. In San Antonio, a dollar is a dollar. The Spurs, they manage very well, I will draw from them,” says TP. “They were selected several times as the best four sports franchises in the United States. This is a very good example. I spoke with Popovich in the (team) plane, he was already beginning to give me advice. He was very proud of me. He is always quite impressed with what I do for my country.”
Parker will take the helm of ASVEL in May and with lessons learned from the Spurs, the team will hopefully have the same success.
