Report: Spurs interested in Gustavo Ayon

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the San Antonio Spurs are interested in free agent center Gustavo Ayon, who is about to play for Mexico in the coming days at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

As previously reported, and as Stein mentions, the Spurs are still interested in restricted free agent Aron Baynes, though he’s also fielding offers from European teams reportedly.

The Spurs currently have one roster spot remaining and the full mid-level exception to use. Bryce Cotton, JaMychal Green, and Josh Davis have non-guaranteed deals, as they’re expected to battle for that last roster spot at training camp in October.

Ayon, 29, is a 6’10” center who has played with New Orleans, Milwaukee, Orlando, and Atlanta since 2012. In his two-year NBA career, Ayon’s averaged 4.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Back in 2011, the Spurs also reportedly had interest in Ayon, before he decided to sign with New Orleans.
