Report: Gasol close to choosing Bulls

Friday afternoon, there were several reports that free agent Pau Gasol had narrowed his choices down to the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. According to Jesus Sanchez of the Spanish paper Marca.com, Gasol is leaning toward the Bulls as his choice, if the sides can figure out a sign-and-trade.

Finally, the power forward Catalan continue his career, almost certainly, in the Bulls.

Pau has virtually closed the deal with Chicago and plans to pass the medical examination before returning to Barcelona in the coming days.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports also confirmed that the Bulls and Lakers are working on a deal.

The report from Sanchez does indicate that a sign-and-trade would likely have to happen in order for the deal to go through. The Spurs can only offer Gasol the Mid-Level Exception worth $5.3 million, but the Bulls have several options to work with that could net Gasol more salary. The Bulls can complete a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, they can amnesty Carlos Boozer to open up some room, or they can offer the Mid-Level Exception like the Spurs.

Gasol also went to Twitter Friday to announce that he was near a decision. Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported the Atlanta Hawks could have given him more money like the Lakers, but Gasol wasn’t interested.

Until a deal is confirmed, Project Spurs will continue to monitor Gasol’s situation.
