As if the San Antonio Spurs had not proved worthy of their title of “trailblazers” enough, they recently hired San Antonio Stars guard, Becky Hammon, as the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history.
However, Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich made it clear Tuesday in a statement, that Hammon’s assignment had nothing to do with gender, but everything to do with her basketball qualifications.
Hammon, who will retire from the WNBA after this season, spent last season shadowing the Spurs’ staff during games, practices, and film reviews- further prepping her for her new position.
It did not take long for Spurs fans to catch wind of the news. They welcomed the addition to the coaching staff with positivity, as they Tweeted their thoughts as soon as the story broke on Tuesday afternoon for the latest Project Spurs Fan React.
“That is great! Me being the father of two girls that’s awesome to hear!” – @hlimon2009
“[…] I love it. Setting the tone for basketball moving forward. It shouldn’t matter about gender. Skill is skill.” – @SirEdwardJames
“I’m a big fan of Becky Hammon. High Quality player with heart.” – @Rennnyrunner
Spurs fans were not the only ones excited about seeing a female on the bench next season, the POTUS himself took to Twitter to congratulate Hammon on her position Wednesday evening,
“Congrats to @BeckyHammon, @NBA’s first full-time female coach. When #WomenSucceed, America succeeds – and we know the @Spurs will, too. -bo”
Well said, Mr. President.
