Throughout the month of June, there have been conflicting reports about the future of former CSKA Moscow head coach Ettore Messina. Back on June 10, a report surfaced stating Messina was going to join Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff next season as an assistant coach. Soon after, San Antonio Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford denied the report, but then a second report brought the subject backup on June 19.
Now according to Sportando.com, if Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd is released amid controversy of a conflict between he and the Nets’ brass, and he leaves to Milwaukee to be the President of Basketball Operations with the Bucks, there’s a chance Messina could be Kidd’s replacement in Brooklyn.
Another serious candidate is Ettore Messina, source told Sportando. The Italian coach left CSKA Moscow after two seasons and was expected to join Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio. But Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov is a fan of CSKA Moscow with whom Messina won the Euroleague title a few seasons ago. Two years ago in Istanbul during the Euroleague Final Four lost to Olympiacos, Prokhorov was cheering for CSKA Moscow in a royal box.
Ettore Messina was reportedly in America over the last few days.
As for the Spurs, they currently have five assistant coaches on Gregg Popovich’s staff in Jim Boylen, Sean Marks, Ime Udoka, Chip Engelland, and Chad Forcier.
