Spurs still in Oden chase, but may have to wait another month for decision

After word came out on the first day of free agency that the San Antonio Spurs were one of five teams in the chase for free agent center Greg Oden, Thursday two reports revealed the Spurs are still in contention for Oden but they may have to wait until August to hear a decision from the young center.

With the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the Andrew Bynum sweepstakes, one would think they’re out of the Oden race. However, as the Stein report says, the Cavaliers could still be in the hunt.

As for the Spurs, once they make all of their free agent signings official in the coming days, there will be just one roster spot available as the team will be set at 14. There has been rumors of the team wanting to bring back restricted free agent Gary Neal, but no such deal has been discussed according to reports.

If Neal does re-sign or the Spurs sign another free agent, the roster would be maxed out at 15 players. If Oden did choose San Antonio, the only way the Spurs could sign him would be to trade a player on their roster for a draft pick or cash incentive, or waive a player.

However come August and there’s a vacant spot remaining on the Spurs’ roster, then the Oden to Spurs rumors will really have more life to them.
