Spurs shopping Blair for best offer?

For a while now it has seemed like the clock was running out on DeJuan Blair’s time with the San Antonio Spurs. The fourth year big man has seen his minutes reduced this season, only seeing the floor in blowouts and when the starters need some extra rest.

Blair isn’t bringing much to the table. It’s not his fault. The Spurs are just so deep that they don’t really need him.

Blair could play some quality minutes on any number of different teams in the NBA, and it’s looking like he might get that chance.

“The San Antonio Spurs will likely move forward DeJuan Blair close to the deadline, ultimately accepting the best final offer for him, sources said. Blair has wanted a trade for more than a year, and clearly will not re-sign with the Spurs as a free agent this summer.”

That report that Blair has wanted out of San Antonio for a year is news to me. I certainly believe he’s not really happy here, but he manages to put on a pretty positive face most of the time.

Apparently the Spurs were looking to get a first-round pick for Blair, but no one was biting. They may have to settle for a second-rounder or just a player with an expiring contract. The options are limited when trying to get rid of a player who only averages around 13 minutes a game.

At this point, what the Spurs get for Blair doesn’t really matter. I’d like to see them get a draft pick for him, because with the team’s track history, even a late second-rounder could turn into something special.

It’s unfortunate for Blair, who came out of college with a lot of promise. He may get his chance somewhere else, but he just didn’t fit in with the Spurs.
