The San Antonio Spurs have played 47 games so far this season. DeJuan Blair has made an appearance in 34 of them. For those too lazy to do the math, that’s 13 games that Blair hasn’t even seen the floor.
It’s pretty clear that he’s one of the last guys on the bench and with the way Tiago Splitter has been playing and with the addition of Aron Baynes, you have to wonder if Blair’s time in San Antonio may be drawing to a close.
Blair is staying optimistic though. After logging 19 solid minutes against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday where he scored 22 points on 10-13 shooting, he sent out an uplifting tweet.
“Thanks for all the support I needed that game right there! I still got it dont let the DNP's fool u! Just waitin on that moment! #Gospursgo”
So Blair thinks he can still play, the question is whether or not his “moment” will be with the Spurs or another team.
As someone who’s never been a big Blair fan (I think he’s undersized and a little too slow), I think he’s going to have to accept the fact that he’s never going to be a big minute player with the Spurs. He can be an occasional “DNP” player on a championship caliber team or he can try and get some more minutes with someone else.
The Spurs probably wouldn’t care either way. If DeJuan wants out to prove he can be a true NBA player, I bet they’d have no problem letting him go. They’re currently the best record in the league and letting one of their last bench players see if the grass is greener somewhere else would be no big deal. It wouldn’t be hard to find another guy to fill Blair’s role.
