With just three games remaining in the Eurobasket 2013 Qualifier, San Antonio Spurs draftee Davis Bertans and Latvia (3-2) have inched closer to locking up a position for the 2013 Eurobasket, while Adam Hanga and Hungary have fallen further behind in their individual group.
On Thursday, Latvia defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 80-64 to take first place in Group D, as Bertans put on an almost perfect shooting performance, as he shot 4-of-4 from the field (2-of-2 from three), and 1-fo-2 from the free throw line to finish the game with 11 points, seven rebounds, one steal, and four turnovers.
With the victory, Latvia will next face the Netherlands (2-3) this coming Wednesday in Almere. If Latvia can come away with the victory, they would almost be a lock to win their group and secure a position to participate in next years Eurobasket.
Hanga and Hungary on the other hand didn’t have the same success as Latvia, as they fell in a close game 78-76 to the Ukraine. Hanga struggled in the game as he scored 15 points on 4-of-14 field goal attempts. Six of his points came from the free throw line where he was able to take 10 free throw attempts. Hanga grabbed three rebounds, dished two assists, and stole the ball once in the game, all without turning the ball over once.
With the loss, Hungary has fallen to fourth place in Group C, as they prepare to face Austria (2-3) on Wednesday. In order to secure a place for Eurobasket, your team has to finish in either first or second place in your group, or you have to finish third and earn your position based on other statistics. Right now, Hungary is treading close elimination waters, as the game against Austria Wednesday will be somewhat of a “must win” for Hanga and company.
