Q&A with Danny Green Part 1: Talking Greece, Spurs and more

This past weekend, Danny Green, who played last season with the San Antonio Spurs, took part in the Malone Mulhall Benefit Game at St. John’s University. The game was established in honor of Jamie Malone, Paige Malone, and Michael Mulhall who were killed in a car accident while they were on their way to a camp for those with special needs. All proceeds and donations from the game are directed to The Jamie and Paige Malone Foundation and a scholarship established in Michael Mulhall’s name.

While I was at the game, I caught up with Green who expressed his thankfulness for being a part of such a game and stated he had no problems taking time out to help out a worthy cause.

Right before the game, Green and I sat down to talk on tons of topics including the rumors of him playing overseas in Greece, continuing to work out with some of his former Spurs teammates, and more.

Also, if you are in the New York area, Green is holding a basketball camp in North Babylon, NY from August 1-5 at Robert Moses Middle School. The fee is $250 which includes free lunch for the week for the kids in attendance, professional speakers, trainers and more.

Here is part one of this Project Spurs’ interview with Green.

Jeff: What of the reports you are off to Greece and Olympiakos. Is there any truth to that?

Danny: There was a rumor. We were looking at different stuff. We don’t know what’s going to happen. I mean obviously I want to play. I don’t just want to sit at home. I want to stay in shape, and find somewhere else to play and to make money at the same time. But I can’t do that without an out clause and Olympiakos, I don’t think, gives anybody a contract without an out clause.

So you have not signed with team?

I have not signed with anybody yet. Right now I’m just focusing on staying in shape and hopefully getting this lockout over. And if not, we’ll look at other options and hopefully I can find a place where I can go to and then when this lockout is over, come back.

But if you do go overseas, it will not be to stay. You would want to come back to the NBA.

Definitely. Like I said, I’m not too focused on it right now.

Have to been in contact with any of your teammates?

Yeah. I saw them actually about a week or two ago. We all went back. We talked about dates we want to go back and workout with each other.

Which Spurs did you speak with?

The main guys we worked out with at the end of the summer were mostly the young guys. James Anderson, DeSean Butler, Gary Neal was there for a little bit, George Hill before he got traded. I’ve seen him (Hill) about two weeks to when I was in San Antonio for the WNBA All-Star game was there. We saw that game. But Cory Joseph, I’ve kept in touch with him. Hopefully we will go back again, I think in about a week or two, to go workout again with each other. Me, Cory, DaSean Butler, James Anderson mostly the young guys. We keep in contact with each other, stay in shape, and we’ll see what happens from there on.

Come back to Project Spurs tomorrow for part two of this Q&A with Green where he talks about the first-round loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, his thoughts on the Dallas Mavericks-Miami Heat series, and more.
